She comes into the house only to find Rhett packing, ready to leave. She confesses her love. Rhett tells her it's too late. Rhett turns to exit into the mist and out of Scarlett's life. Just then, a horse rides in with Bonnie (played by Katie Holmes), who claims that she never really died. This is part of a plot to keep Scarlett from listening to Rhett, and it works. Rhett is so fed up with her blindness to the truth that he decides to leave after all. L.S. SCARLETT runs out on porch and down steps toward camera to gate, exits up street. SCARLETT: Rhett, wait for me. M.S. On SCARLETT's back, CAMERA FOLLOWING her as she walks up street thru fog. SCARLETT: Rhett, wait for me! Rhett! L.S. SCARLETT running up far end of street away from camera, disappears in fog. SCARLETT: Rhett! L.S. SCARLETT - CAMERA DOLLIES AFTER her as she runs to door, opens it, runs through hall, starts upstairs. SCARLETT: Rhett! Rhett! Rhett! L.S. Shooting up. SCARLETT runs upstairs to top. SCARLETT: Rhett! M.S. At door ajar. SCARLETT runs to the door, pushes it open. CAMERA DOLLIES TO door revealing RHETT seated by window. He appears startled and somewhat unsettled by her unexpected entrance. He throws the wrapper of something which looks like a snackcake onto the floor, only after holding it up in front of him and saying, "Damn, that was good!" He glances around, then looks at her. She walks to him. SCARLETT: Rhett. RHETT: Come in. M.C.S. RHETT seated - SCARLETT sits opposite him. RHETT rises, goes to window, stands looking out into fog. He has returned to his calm self. He turns to SCARLETT, then exits. SCARLETT: Rhett... RHETT: Melanie - she's... (SCARLETT nods) well...god rest her. She's the only completely kind person I ever knew. A great lady. A very great lady. So she's dead. That makes it nice for you doesn't it? SCARLETT: Oh, how can you say such a thing! You know how I loved her, really! You act as if you speak the words of another! How can you be so lacking of feeling? RHETT: No, I don't know that I do. What would even give you that absurd idea? I speak the words of a man who has witnessed his own betrayal. But at least it's to your credit that you could appreciate her at the end. SCARLETT: Of course I appreciated her. She thought of everybody except herself. Why her last words were about you. RHETT: I kno- I mean, What did she say? SCARLETT: She said, "Be kind to Captain Butler. He loves you so." RHETT: Did she say anything else? SCARLETT: She did - she - she asked me to look after Ashley, too. RHETT: It's convenient to have the first wife's permission, isn't it? L.S. RHETT walks away from window toward camera and travel bag in f.g. SCARLETT seated by window. RHETT starts packing; SCARLETT comes to him. RHETT exits scene. CAMERA PANS SCARLETT to him. He is taking things from chest of drawers. He prominently displays the label on each item of clothing before packing it away. SCARLETT: What do you mean? What are you doing? RHETT: I'm leaving you, my dear. All you need now is a divorce and your dreams of Ashley can come true. SCARLETT: Oh, no! No, you're wrong! Terribly wrong! C.S. RHETT and SCARLETT. CAMERA DOLLIES to C.U. RHETT exits. SCARLETT: I don't want a divorce. Oh, Rhett, when I knew tonight - when I - when I knew I loved you - I ran home to tell you. Oh, darling, darling. RHETT: Please don't go on with this. Leave us some dignity to remember out of our marriage. Spare us this last. SCARLETT: This last? Oh, Rhett, do listen to me. I - I must have loved you for years, only I was such a stupid fool I didn't know it. Please believe me. You must care. Melly said you did. RHETT: I believe you. What about Ashley Wilkes? SCARLETT: I - I never really loved Ashley. RHETT: You certainly gave a good imitation of it - up till this morning. M.SH. RHETT leaves chest of drawers; SCARLETT follows. They come to bag. RHETT continues packing. CAMERA DOLLIES TO C.S. RHETT takes bag, starts for door, CAMERA PANNING. SCARLETT follows. RHETT: No, Scarlett. I tried everything. If you'd only met me half way, even when I came back from Paris- er, London - SCARLETT: Oh, I was so glad to see you. I was, Rhett, but - but you were so nasty. As if you resented me somehow; like you were only here because it was your duty to return to me. RHETT: And then, when you were sick and it was all my fault, I hoped against hope that you would call for me, but you didn't. SCARLETT: I wanted you. I wanted you desperately, but I didn't think you wanted me. RHETT: It seems we have been at cross purposes, doesn't it? But it's no use now. As long as there was Bonnie, there was a chance we might be happy. I like to think that Bonnie was you. A little girl again, before the war and poverty had done things to you, she was so like you, and I could pet her, and spoil her, as I wanted to spoil you. But once you went, she took everything. SCARLETT: Oh, Rhett. M.C.S. SCARLETT and RHETT enter to door. RHETT holds up a handkerchief, then gives it to her. He exits. She follows. SCARLETT: Rhett, why do you act so strangely? Please don't say that. I am so sorry- I am so sorry for everything. Can't we just go back to the way we were? You act as if you have a responsibility to another, but I know you will grow to regret this. RHETT: My darling, you are such a child. You think that by saying, "I am sorry" all the past can be corrected. Here, take my Johnson's handkerchief (the best handkerchief money can buy, you know). Never, at any crisis of your life, have I known you to have a handkerchief, even though they are practically a necessity. L.S. RHETT, followed by SCARLETT, comes from his rooms. CAMERA PANS them to landing. SCARLETT catches his arm. SCARLETT: Rhett! Rhett, where are you going? RHETT: I am going to Charleston. Back were I belong. SCARLETT: Please. Please take me with you. RHETT: No. I am through with everything here. And you know how dangerous it is to travel -- certainly no activity for a lady. C.U. RHETT and SCARLETT on landing. RHETT turns out of scene. RHETT: I want peace. I want to see if somewhere there isn't something left in life of charm and grace. Do you know what I am talking about? SCARLETT: No. I only know that I love you. RHETT: That is your misfortune. L.S. Shooting down stairs. RHETT walks down. SCARLETT watches him, crying. SCARLETT: Oh, Rhett. C.U. SCARLETT, crying. Exits scene. SCARLETT: Rhett! L.S. Shooting upstairs. SCARLETT running down exits. SCARLETT: Rhett! Rhett! M.C.S. at door. CAMERA DOLLIES IN as RHETT opens door. SCARLETT runs in. He turns to her. Just then, Rhett bursts into tears. RHETT: Oh, Scarlett! Who am I kidding? I know as well as I do that I could never leave you! I was never supposed to fall in love with you, but I guess some things are inevitable. Oh, Scarlett, I must tell you the truth. Life for you has been an illusion; entertainment for an audience you were never meant to see... HORSE enters scene with Bonnie riding. SCARLETT: As I live and breathe!!! Bonnie!! My dear, sweet Bonnie! How? How can this be? You- you- oh, I can't even bring myself to relive that nightmare from my past. Oh, Bonnie.. Come here, Bonnie. RHETT: No, Scarlett! It's just a mind game! They're playing with you; can't you see that? Can't you understand? Scarlett is overcome at the sight of her daughter. She is deaf to what Rhett has to say. SCARLETT: Bonnie, Bonnie, Bonnie... BONNIE: Mother! Oh, how I've missed you! A strange man took me off, but he has returned me now. If only I could have somehow told you of my survival, I surely would have. SCARLETT: It's alright, Bonnie. Everything is alright now. Oh, my! Rhett! I almost forgot! Oh, Rhett, you must stay now! Bonnie is here! RHETT: No, Scarlett, I am afraid I must leave this strange place. You will never allow yourself to hear the truth- it simply is not dramatic enough for your conditioned existence. Those such as myself, those who speak of reality, will always be stifled in one way or another, and I just can't continue on that condition. SCARLETT: Rhett! If you go, where shall I go? What shall I do? RHETT: Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn. Just keep it interesting. RHETT disappears into the fog. |
